What is Trauma Informed Coaching?

Trauma-informed coaching is an approach to coaching that recognizes how past or ongoing trauma can affect a person’s thoughts, behaviors, emotions, and decision-making, and then adapts the coaching process to be safe, respectful, and empowering rather than triggering or overwhelming.

At its core, it is not therapy and does not try to treat trauma directly. Instead, it creates an environment where someone can grow, set goals, and move forward while honoring their experiences.

What makes coaching “trauma-informed”

A trauma-informed coach understands concepts from Psychology and Trauma Studies, especially how trauma impacts the nervous system, trust, and sense of safety. Then they apply a few key principles:

1. Safety first
The coach prioritizes emotional and psychological safety. Sessions are structured so the client does not feel judged, rushed, or exposed.

2. Choice and control
Clients are always in control of what they share and how fast they move. Nothing is forced or pushed.

3. Trust and transparency
The coach is clear about boundaries, expectations, and the coaching process, which helps rebuild trust.

4. Empowerment
Instead of focusing on what is “wrong,” the coach focuses on strengths, resilience, and the client’s ability to make decisions.

5. Awareness of triggers
The coach avoids language or techniques that could unintentionally bring up distressing memories or reactions.
